Research
In the past, Harbor-UCLA Radiology has pioneered in the development of
Current areas of research interest include
The four main areas of research in the Imaging Center are:
Since inception of the imaging center, over one hundred research papers concerning these areas have been published in major medical journals. Current research programs involve the collaboration of many of the clinical disciplines including neurology, psychiatry, pulmonology and rheumatology with our radiologists. Rounding out our research team is an MR physicist.
Additionally, the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is heavily involved in research and is housed in several buildings on campus.
A 1.5 Tesla superconductive magnetic resonance unit operates in our campus Imaging Center. The Imaging Center has been open for high field MR and computed tomography (CT) studies since January 1987. Physicians from China, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Korea, France, Taiwan, Singapore, Italy and the United States have studied the latest MR techniques here. As a result, the Center is recognized by health care professionals as an "international training site."
Harbor-UCLA also has Vitrea 2 workstations, advanced 3D visualization and analysis workstations with software protocols for advanced 3D reconstruction for surgical planning and increased clinical utility. This is currently being used primarily as a research tool for endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm stenting with Dr. Walot (radiology), and Drs. Donayre and White (vascular surgery).
The A.F. Parlow Library is located immediately behind the main hospital building and is a full-service library that has over 27,000 books, 30,000 bound journals and receives over 750 subscription periodicals. The library also houses computers for use by residents and provides free photocopying to housestaff and faculty. Additionally, residents at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center are eligible to receive BruinOnLine accounts through UCLA, which provides for extensive at-home access to nearly all electronic journals.
